Hong-ik-in-ghan(HIIG, 弘益人間) is the main content related to the Korean earliest King Tan-gun, and is generally interpreted as meaning the worthy human who pursues a worthy life for others. Although HIIG has been significant models in Korea as much for current national educational ideology as for several indigenous religions, it may have no ethical meaning in the other nations. The reason is because the study of HIIG has mainly been related to Korean ethnics, the far past, and several decades of very old books.
This paper, therefore, presents the necessity of HIIG study towards contemporary and future world community, and explores the development directions of HIIG in terms of global community, information ethics, and Korean cultural contents. As the world has grown smaller and all the societies have become almost one community, we need both global ethics and variant cultural resources for continuous development of human beings.
The main implication of this paper, thus, is what we understand that it is important to pursue practical application rather than to do historical and theoretical discussion on HIIG. At this point, this paper attempts to provide an alternative interpretation of HIIG to be available to information age and global civil society.
