The main goal of this paper is to examine the theme of an androgynous demon as it appears in Mikhail Vrubel's paintings in a broad context of the fin-de-siecle Russia's intellectual and cultural contexts. In one of his major paintings, "The Seated Demon" (1890), which was originally inspired by Mikhail Lermontov's poem of the same title, Vrubel transforms the typically Romantic image of a demon as an isolated and outcast figure into a powerful symbol of the soul of a human being. In this painting Vrubel characteristically portrays the demon as possessing both the masculine and feminine features; the former is expressed in the muscular and powerful body of the demon, while the other in the demon's beautiful face laced with the mood of deep sorrow and melancholy. These two forces symbolizing the inner essence of a human being, however, do not remain in the painting in a state of a hopeless opposition, but are shown to be seeking a way of a synthesis and reconciliation.
Vrubel's image of the androgynous demon is further discussed in connection with various thinkers and poets of the Silver age. Vrubel's androgynous demon is compared to Vladimir Solov' ev' s theory of ideal eros as expressed in his essay, "The Meaning of Love" 0892-94), and to Viacheslav Ivanov's theory of Dionysian love, and to the demonic principle in Aleksandr Blok's poetry.
