Effects of age of acquisition and first language knowledge on acquisition of stress patterns by early (age of acquisition 1-6 years) and late (age of acquisition 15-34 years) Spanish English and Korean-English bilinguals are reviewed. Although stress patterns may be learned on a word-by-word basis and stress patterns extended from phonologically similar words, the abstraction of patterns across the lexicon is less likely for late learners. Knowledge of first language patterns may transfer and interfere with the acquisition of second language stress patterns in Spanish learners whose first language has lexical prosody. Abstractions of high level patterns, such as those across lexical class, may be less likely for Korean learners who do not have word level prosody in their first language. The early bilinguals were also found to differ somewhat from native English speakers in their use of stress patterns based on lexical class and syllabic structure, indicating that the early acquisition of first language prosodic knowledge may affect second language prosodic knowledge even in early learners.
