Xarms's The Old Woman is considered as the best work of his entire ouvre. It was written on the eve of his impending arrest, when the author knows that his ending is near, which serves as the best time for a human being to search for God.
On the surface, The Old Woman looks plotless, illogical, absurd, and even childish. But a close examination reveals the serious aspect of the work: problem of God, faith, and eternity, which is central theme of the work. For this theme, old woman is a driving power and leading figure.
The Old woman who is the title of the story is a central character of the work and without her, the narrator's recovery of faith would have been lost. This paper examins the role and meaning of the old woman in the journey of the narrator's spiritual resurrection.
The fist meeting with the old woman reminds the narrator of the higher godly world which can be an exit from this automatized deadly world. With the ability of reading clocks from the handless clock. the old woman hits the narrator of the eternity which is the sam as God's world where there is no time anymore.
The second meeting reveals another miracle. As soon as the narrator, whose job is an author writes about a miracle worker, the old woman appears on his doorway, as if she answers to his call. Even after her death, her existence itself controls the narrator's action. When the narrator meets a lovely woman who represents earthly temptation, he sneaks away from her, because the old woman's dead body is lying on the floor of his apartment.
It is worth noting that only main characters-lovely woman, old woman, narrator, do not have names. Their namelessness make abstractization and generalization possible: lovely woman- earthly temptation, old woman--guide to heavenly eternity, and narrator--human being between these two.
The Old woman disappears when they went beyond the boundary of the city Leningrad (its old name Petersburg) and where there is a small forest. The confused narrator goes to the forest and says the prayer to God in front of a caterpillar, symbol of resurrection. He recovers the faith in God and is promised with eternity.
My paper shows that the narrator's "abrupt" resurrection is not abrupt at all. The journey to God is guided, sometimes forced by the old woman, without whom the journey itself is impossible.
