The aim of this study is to identify those archaeological sites dating from the early medieval period, which, while located in peripheral regions, nonetheless produce artifacts reminiscent of those unearthed in Kamakura, and then, from a variety of perspectives, to examine the underlying reasons for this commonality.
Beginning with the ?date site, it can be shown that the area was the political, commercial and religious centre of Mutsu province and that a comparison of the history of the H?j? family during these years with changes in the archaeological record may indicate that the area served as one of the main nodes of H?j? authority in the region.
Similar developments may be seen at the Zuiganji Temple. Excavations conducted within the precincts of this temple indicate that, both because the region was important in maritime communications and because the H?j? had local connections, they may have sought to secure the appointment of clerics closely allied to their own clan and so build up their influence over a locality that served as one of the chief centers of trade and religion in the province of Mutsu.
Similar trends are evident at Serata in Kozuke Province. Here the H?j? were able to extend their authority to the religious, transport and trade centers within the domains of other families and at the same time eat into their power base by exploiting their creeping influence over the locally important Ch?rakuji temple. These actions immediately foreshadowed the shogunate’s own destruction.
The conclusion that emerges from this study is that by is that by adopting a broad synthetic approach combining various types of data, it is possible to create links between different types of source material that have hitherto been used in isolation. The value of such an approach is revealed when it is, for example, noted that the document in which the shogunate ordered the construction of the Omonoimi Shrine has been preserved in the Serata Ch?rakuji and that this, in and of itself, points to the likelihood of the Hojo exercising local influence.
