There are a lot of researches on ichizoku and ichimon of Japanese samurai society at the middle ages. And, they have been thought to be the same meaning ‘the clan’, without doubting. In this research, I analyzed the case of Kobayakawa- ichizoku to confirm that they have had really the same meanings at that age, and to consider the factor of the sumurai’s formation of the community.
The word ichimon is used in the private documents like yuzurijo (the documents written for one’s children to distribute his or her lands) in the many cases. It meant ‘my descendants’. They used the word like, “if you won’t have been blessed with no child, give my inheritance to the ichimon after you.” They are feared that their property goes to a person other than their descendants, even if that person is their kin like their brother or sister. This means that they exclude every person except their descendants from an heir, and their children will also do the same in their turn. So the extent of ichimon changes according to who is a starting point of it. People have the affection to ichimon but each person’s ichimon is different. Therefore the affection to ichimon shall never be the factor of making the community.
The next, about the word Ichizoku, It has been used in the state papers of the instruction of public loads, for example, drafts and taxes. Those papers are sent to soryo-ke(means an ie leading the ichizoku), who distributes the loads to ichizoku. So we can say Ichizoku is ‘a cooperative unit to fulfill the public obligations’.
The quite difference between ichimon and ichizoku is the component. The former is consisted by the human beings. On the other hand, the latter by the ies. The elements ie of the ichizoku had been born from the soryo-ke. When the master of the soryo-ke (called soryo) distributes his or her land as the inheritance to his or her ichimon or someone, they become the master of the new ie (called shoshi-ke) belonging to the ichizoku. And ichizoku includes the various lineages because soryo might sometimes give the land to someone, which is adopted-children, taking-children, sons-in-law, and even vassals.
Mistaking ichimon and ichizoku to the clan, it is thought that the affection to kin makes the strong unity. But the truth is that most of people at the age are indifferent in their kin but their ichimon, and that ichizoku which has been thought to be kin-community is just the systemized group for government’s burden. The mutual aid organization was not the one that was formed with the psychological factor like the kin- consciousness but formed with an external factor like a social system.
