This paper explores the characteristics, themes, and key concepts of the Latin American modernity/coloniality research group. This group is associated with the few central figures, chiefly Enrique Dussel, A. Quijano and Walter D. Mignolo. It criticize world system scholars' s economic reductionism and postcolonial theorists' s culturalism. It also point out that all kinds of main Western theory such as Marxism, liberalism, world system theory, postmodernism and postcolonial ism cannot escape from Eurocentrim.
Key concepts of this group are coloniality of power, transmodernity, and border thinking. A. Quijano's notion of Coloniality of power is a global hegemonic model of power since the Conquest that that articulate race and labor, space and peoples for the benefit of white European peoples. E. Dussel's notion of Transmodernity is a future-oriented project for overcoming modernity not simply by negating it but by thinking about it from its underside, from the perspective of the excluded other. Walter D. Mignolo' s notion Border thinking points at the need for a kind of thinking that moves along the diversity of historical process.
