The above presentation is an examination of the satire in 《Can shu》, which is a collection of satirical short stories written by Luo Yin. Luo Yin was interested in politics so much so that he sat the public service examination(Ke ju) 10 times, which were used as a means of finding and recruiting new talent for positions as high-ranking government officials. His interest in and frustration with politics may have motivated him to create Xiao Pin Wen which satirized the political confusion and corruption which occurred during the last days of the Tang Dynasty. The following is a brief description of the characteristics and nature of Xiao Pin Wen, obtained through an analysis of 《Can shu》. The most important question is whether the stories in 《Can shu》 were poignant enough for it to be a work that expresses the resistance and fury that the era witnessed, as Lu Xun once noted.
Luo Yin's works in 《Can shu》 contain sharp and clever references to those times, however, the language and expressions used in his works seem to be more subtle and gentle when compared with the works of Pi Ri Xiu and Liu Zong Yuan who were both considered to be masters of satirical literature during the Chinese Tang era. Another characteristic of Luo Yin's works is that many of them were based on actual history. Luo Yin wrote a lot of Yong shi shi(詠史詩)for poetic and lyrical composition which showed his knowledge and insight of history, because history would have been the best tool for examining the troubled times and foreseeing the future.
As there were many strict historical restrictions, the old mores were frequently quoted, which makes it harder for today's scholars to understand the exact meaning of the text. In his works Luo Yin also expressed his beliefs which were a completely new way of thinking from the traditional viewpoints of Confucianism, and he demonstrated innovative ideas and flexible thinking. However, the fact that his interests only lay with the ruling class and the upper class, as revealed in an analysis of his works, was one of his limitations. Regardless of the themes, the story lines of Luo Yin's works were limited to the ruling class, which exposed his limitations with respect to his views of the social and class system.
The above is my brief interpretation and analysis of the characteristics and nature of Luo Yin's 《Can Shu》. This analysis, however, is more of an outline which has been produced in the circumstances that the research related to this subject has not yet been completed, and therefore more expert and in-depth research on this subject is required for future reference.
