In the 19th century, a few novels were written in Chinese letters by the high class intelligent : 〈Yookmidanggi(육미당기)〉, 〈Oksugi(옥수기)〉, 〈Okrumong(옥루몽)〉 ect. It is meaningful because the intelligent had neglected Korean classical novels for centuries. However the writers of those novels intended to show off their talent and criticize irrational society through novels. It is certain that they more advanced than other high class intelligent on that point.
Nevertheless there are different opinions about the inclination of the writers. Therefore this essay aim to examine the inclination of the writers by analyzing the figuration of women characters because a view of womanhood could be a good measure of writer's sense of value, specially in a strong patriarchy.
Above novels show a progressive view of womanhood to some extent : figuration of very able women, emphasis on the true friendship between man and woman. On the other hand, they still reveal the androcentric sense and the feudalistic idea : defense of the polygamous system, emphasis on the women's fidelity, sense of class distinction.
As a result, Korean Classical Novels Written in Chines Letters in the 19th Century have the limit that writers couldn't overcome conservatism as Yangban(양반), although it shows criticism about government and governors.
