In the 1980s when the South Korean society was changing dramatically and rapidly, some sort of hybridity displayed in a group of South Korean Films including Deep Blue Night, America America, That Which Falls Has Wings, Queen Bee, Into the Heat of the Night, and Chil-su and Man-su reflected certain features of the postcolonial period such as an expansion of diaspora and a mixture among different cultures, as well as a close interaction between context and text. These films seem to imply a strong political meaning since they expose the distorted power relations between South Korea and the U.S. through hybridity and highlight the position of the latter which still holds hegemony. It is noticeable that all of their characters who pursue the hybridity blindly or are just given it should face tragic destiny even though these films don't utilize the hybridity itself as an useful means of resistance against hegemony.
What their tragic conclusion through the hybridity means seems clear. First, South Korea is still subordinated to the U.S. politically, economically and culturally. Second, South Koreans are perhaps likely to regard the U.S. as a superior existence, an object of adoration and the power itself. Third, there is a strong probability that the interminglement in the various areas is done in the leadership of/under the control of the U.S. because of an imbalance of the power relations. Therefore, this kind of hybridity can hardly result in a happy end if the U.S. does not care at all or ignore it, independent of how voluntarily and positively South Koreans try to pursue it.
The films represent not only physical but also immaterial violent situation due to the unbalanced power relations for a long time. They testify that the colonial reality has been maintained even though the world appears to change a lot since the legal independence. In this way, the postcolonial hybridity functions as symbolic codes which reveal the hegemonic relations in a harsh reality.
