Shanghai was a nearest modern city, an international city with mixture of eastern and western culture, and a new world of the latest contents to Koreans. Shanghai was thought to be the land of opportunity for Koreans, whom were amazed by modern culture and were suffering from loss of country. It was the very reason why Koreans rushed to the city with various dreams in their hearts. Generally, the image of ‘new world’ seemed similar to everyone, however, it was no longer similar to every Koreans leaded by their own dreams. Especially, the difference between anti-Japan and pro-Japan was clearly visible. The period when KPG(Korea Provisional Government) stayed in Shanghai seemed totally differed from the Shanghai without it.
To Koreans, Shanghai was a modern city for its universality and specialty. Thinking about universality, the city was like a port that. imports modern cultures and contents. Many universities founded by western people were the places to accept modern, foreign cultures for Korean young men and were gates to the new world. And people of Shanghai were also proud of their world class art contents, like movies and plays. Skyscrapers and waves of cars were also common like in any other modern cities. In the opposite side of fancy surface, underground and back-street cultures were also like other modern cities. Nevertheless, it should have seemed quite special to Koreans.
On the other hand, Shanghai was the city of specialty to Koreans. Firstly, the city was a special place related to national problem. Among foreign sectors, French Sector was the place where Korean independence movements were possible. On the contrary, Public Sector was the place for pro-Japan Koreans. Two different kinds of places for Koreans stayed together in the same city. According to their purpose, their residence site and lifestyle seemed different. Shanghai was the place of intersection between anti-Japan and pro-Japan, and the battlefield for KPG and Japanese investigation. Korean society was a background of intelligence battle between KPG and Japanese general consulate of Shanghai. So Koreans staying in Shanghai should take a choice between those two. And that decision made their life different. Shanghai was the city of choice and tension for Koreans.
In a different meaning, Shanghai was the place of national problems. It was the city where Chinese couldn’t live as a host. Racial discrimination showed up everywhere. Despites of the fancy streets of foreign power, places for Chinese seemed worn and miserable. In the half-colonized city, while some Koreans shared same feelings with Chinese, others gave themselves to pro-Japan side and acted the same. The different lifestyle of anti-Japan and pro-Japan made Koreans to choose one of those two.
