Many theorists consider that internet provides a revolutionary communication tool. Yet, internet does not bring about democratic communication and a virtual public sphere in the contemporary social structure. Power intervenes in the democratic use of internet although it does not visibly repress internet users. This paper attempts to uncover the subtle form of power involved in the virtual world system. Adopting Foucault and Bourdieu's conceptual frameworks, this research conducted a discourse analysis of Korean journalism and an ethno-graphic study of Korean young students.
Through symbolic power, internet integrates people even at the margin of the world into the Habitus of the virtual world system. By looking at the internet using pattern by Korean young generation, one can find out how cultural capital such as language and education contributes to reproducing the existing power. Internet affects authoritative communicators in the mass society and also people at the margin in their everday life.
Being influenced by the dominant discourse, Korean journalism initiated to disseminate internet to schools. However, it is frequently criticized by grass-root virtual organizations. They argue against commercialism and negative educational effects of internet movements. While leading social movements of internet use, Korean journalism does not sufficiently consider the use value of internet, nor does it have an attempt to utilize internet as a participatory communication medium.
Korean young generation are mobilized by the dominant discourse of internet which is presented by Korean journalism. For Korean new generation, internet can be a tool of conformation, and at the same time a medium of resistance. They are experiencing new identities in the cyberspace. Although they are minority in the society, and are controlled by adult people, in the cyberspace, the young generation defeats the old generation. It is a kind of experience of deconstructing authority in reality.
However, constructing an alternative identity cannot be accomplished without struggles. Korean students participate in symbolic struggles while using internet as a strategy. Habitus of the virtual world system provides diverse possibilites to Korean new generation. Young people conform the dominant discourse, and at the same time resist to the dominant power at the micro-level. This ethnographic study demonstrates the concerete process of symbolic struggles of Korean new generation.
