Unlike contemporary romance TV drama genres which tend to have large transnational followings, some cultural theorists predicted that historical TV drama genres are unlikely to bate a successful trans-national reception due to their encoding of historical specificities which are believed to be difficult to decode for transnational audiences. Contrary to this prediction, the recent great transnational popularity of Korean historical dramas in China (e.g., Sangdo) and Taiwan (e.g., Dae Jang Geum) requires an interpretation, if not an explanation. In this paper we discuss modern-day transnational cultural and media flows as the continuity of historical transnational cultural flows, and the critical role played by historically shared, (re-)constructed, cultivated and accumulated cultural capital and cultural literacies in the transnational consumption and appropriation of a recent successful Korean historical TV drama, Dae Jang Geum in Taiwan and Hong Kong. We will also discuss how recent Korean cultural imaginaries of gender and sociopolitical modernities have been born of transnationally historically shared cultural capital, cross-cultural encounters and dramatically encoded cultural memories.
