Despite the geographic closeness between Korea and Japan, including high levels of bilateral trade and investment, cultural and political relations have been somewhat problematic. While Korea, with 36 years’ experience as the colonized in the past has been sensitive to the inflow of Japanese popular culture as well as to political gestures from Japan. To coproduce cultural products such as television programs and films, which embody cultural substance reflecting interests and values within the national boundary, is a big challenge for two countries with different cultural resources, industrial capacities, different conventions or shared understandings about what cultural products should be like, and different organizations through which cultural products are displayed, performed, and produced Recently, there have been several attempts at co-production by the two countries’ broadcasters and filmmakers. Considering the specificities of the two countries’ historical and cultural relationships, co-production was conceived as an effective way to introduce inter-national program exchanges. These co-product ions have shown how far the two countries can share their popular cultural codes from production to reception, and have raised the question about the degree to which transnational imagination can be extended by the two countries’ cultural producers. This study intends to deal with the cultural effect of the co-produced dramas, both TV dramas and films, upon transnational imagination. It will discuss whether these kinds of popular cultural exchanges can serve as a momentum to provide images that can prevail over the “otherness” against each other, and to construct transnational cultural codes beyond the national boundary.
