For centuries, patriarchal domination has subjected both women and nature in a variety of ways. One of the most injurious and under-explored is landownership. Historically, private property has given humans the right to not only possess, use, and alter the environment, but the power to destroy the natural world. At the same time, by denying women full access to land rights, laws and public policies have used property as a medium for the oppression of women. In this article, I argue there are historical and theoretical links between the oppression of women and the exploitation of the land that are manifested in public policies and laws. The consequences of this system of dual dominations are two-fold. First, it has led to a gender gap in landownership that has allowed women to remain in an economically, politically, and socially subordinate position. Second, it has resulted in the degradation of the nature. While there have been various attempts to address these two concerns, most efforts fail to make the connection between these two seemingly diverse problems and resolve them in a concomitant manner. Located at the juncture of feminisms goal of improving the status of women and environmentalisms efforts to improve the status of nature, ecofeminism provides one of the first efforts to conjoin the two projects. The aim of this article is to critically examine the linkages between the domination of women and nature under traditional conceptions of landownership.
