Using data from a national sample of twenty six countries, this study examines the question of sex and job values in comparative perspective. Our study finds that there is no clear pattern of sex difference that exists across nations as for the extrinsic and autonomy dimension of job values. However, we do find a clear pattern of sex difference in altruistic dimension of job values, in twenty two out of twenty six countries. What accounts for such sex difference that exists across nations? We show that, at the aggregate level, the degree of occupational sex segregation is very closely related to the amount of sex difference in altruistic dimension of job values. As job and job values reinforce each other, a gendered labor market seems to produce certain sex difference in values. It is important that we seek the origin of such sex difference from the social structural arrangements (gendered differentiation of social roles) rather than from individual factors (dispositional difference between men and women).
