The wide spread of mobile phones has led to the increasing use of them in public space in Korea. Thanks to their immediate, private, and portable characteristics, mobile phones enable people to make a call anyplace and anytime. The use of mobile phones in public space, however, is blamed for causing others inconvenience due to reckless loud talking and bell sound.
In this study, the privatization of public space is defined as people's uncontrolled use of mobile phones in public space. And its study empirically examines how the users privatized public space in the process of their usual use of mobile phones.
Six college students were placed in the in-depth interview session, while 372 college students were surveyed. The items concerned the characteristics of the privatization of public space by means of mobile phones, the relationships between the use of mobile phones and the privatization of public space, and the connections between the users' concern with public issues and the privatization of public space.
As a result, there were five types of privatization of public space by means of mobile phones; the first type was talking on the phone freely in public space; the second one was letting the cellular phone ring loud or talking loud on the phone in public space; the third one was intentional giving out of personal talks in public space; the fourth one was transmitting short messages or searching for information during official work hours; and the fifth one was taking pictures with the camera equipped with the mobile phone in public space.
The characteristics of the users were categorized into three groups according to the way of using mobile phones; they included expressive users, habitual users, and instrumental users. The results revealed that expressive or habitual users went farther in the privatization of public space in using their mobile phones than instrumental users. The expressive users showed the tendency for the privatization in using short messages service, searching for information, and taking pictures with the attached camera, while the habitual users in talking on the phone, using short message service, searching for information and taking pictures with the camera.
The result of this study also reveled that the less concern the users had in public issues, the more tendency they showed toward the privatization of public space while using the phones. In particular, those users with little interest in economic or social problems were more prone to privatize public space using their mobile phones.
Based on the results, it is expected that the privatization of public space with mobile media will increase in the future as mobile media including mobile phones, DMB, and mobile Internet will be popular more and more. Meanwhile, the increasing diverse functions and roles of mobile media such as mobile phones will contribute to the emergence of diverse types of the privatization of public space in the process of their uses. And, from the perspective of society, more negative effects will be observed such as much less attention to public issues by social members and more interest in personal problems as individual-oriented uses of mobile media will grow further.
