Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship in nursing students, to identify relation between the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship. The ultimate aim of the study was to contribute to an establishment of therapeutic interpersonal relationship as a fundamental data.
Method: This study is a descriptive research to understand. The convenience sample were two hundreds and sixty nursing students who were studying at a nursing college in Chungbuk. In this study, two instruments were used. The Self-esteem Scale developed by Rosenberg. It is consisted of 10items. Relationship Change Scale is a 5-point likert-type scale composed of 7subcategories that are 4 items for feeling of satisfaction, 4 items for communication, 3 items for feeling of confidence, 3 items for feeling of intimacy, 2 items for sensibility, 5 items for openness, and 4 items comprehension. The data were collected during April 10 to May 10,2004. The data were analyzed by using SPSS Win 10.1 included percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation coefficient according to the purpose of study.
Result: The results of the study were as follows. There was significant correlation among the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship. The difference of self-esteem according to the characteristicsin subjects was found to have statistically significant in grade and age. The difference of interpersonal relationship according to the caregiver’s love level was found to have statistically significant. Grade, Satisfaction, openness were identified as the factors that influence significantly on self-esteem Conclusions The findings of this study, consequently, showed that interpersonal relationship could be changed through caregiver’s love level. Therefore, caregiver’s behavior was identified to be an important variable that contributed to the satisfaction of interpersonal relationship also this study can provide the fundamental date to develop a facilitative interpersonal relationship to improve self-esteem.
