This paper tries to research, translate and annotate Buddhism related epigraphy which was written in the ancient documents focusing Silla period. The outcome is as below.
It was found out that the epigraphy written in ancient documents was negligently handled despite its importance in historical research. It is because in the case of proving it's existence there are too little contents. Furthermore, it is very important to research carefully since there are some problems with the contents.
First of all, some wordings in the epigraphy are not found in the Silla historical materials. There could be two reasons for this. First, the writer used nick names instead of formal names. The other is when the main character is talking about the title of a government post earned from China.
Secondly there are cases of the compiler (or the editor) changed original words to help readers understanding. It is like when the Koryo period writers write about Silla period materials, writers can change words and terms which were used in Koryo period. Also there are cases of changing words because the compiler misunderstood the epigraphy.
Thirdly when the editor does not translate directly from the original epigraphy but from another document. When it is requoted it is possible to change the original words. Therefore it can be understood differently from the original writers' intention.
There are some limitations in applying the epigraphy written in the ancient documents. However it is possible to overcome these difficulties with researchers careful attention. Carefully translated epigraphy could offer a lot to us as an excellent historical material.
