Ancient currencies in Korea were mainly goods currency and currency by weight, and they played the role of medium in domestic distribution of commercial goods and international trade. Korean ancient currencies appear to have developed up to the stage of currency by weight just before iron coins in the Koryo Dynasty, which were legal money issued by the state. Thus, the period when ancient currencies were circulated during 'the time of currency generation' largely corresponds to the stage just before 'the early days of attempting currency circulation' comprehending the Koryo Dynasty, and is regarded as a process that the stage of exchange and barter was overcome and legal metallic coins were generated for the first time in Korean history in 9m (15th year of King Seongjong in the Koryo Dynasty). Furthermore, 'the period of currency generation' may be understood as a process that the native society in the stage of goods currency and currency by weight subjectively accepted the advanced currency system in China in the stage of metallic currency circulation.
