The purpose of this article is to explore the theory and feminist politics of Gender History, a specific historical methodology which was proposed by a famous feminist and post-structuralist historian, Joan Scott. She wrote a broadly cited essay, "Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis" in 1986, where gender was an important social category divided to a biological category, sex, of course not completely. Presenting gender as a mutable and constructive category, historizing the processes making it, Scott opened possibilities to write an alternative history beyond an existing patriarchal one.
But many feminists criticized that Scott's gender analysis had some dilemmas making feminism and women's history depolitical, eliminating 'women.' In addition to this, another dilemma was endowing superiority to gender over other significant categories, such as class, race, ethnicity, and religious. Because Scott has focused on the sexed power relations, however, she didn't lead to a mistake depoliticizing history and feminism easily and rapidly. Indeed, she has showed new historical writings to expose great errors of universalism excluding women from political place especially around matters of history of feminism, parite movement, and hijabs and veils of Muslim women. Her New and real universalism recognizing and negotiating differences of people and groups deserves to attention and exploration.
