The Korean peninsula was divided into south and north as it became the occupied territories of the US and the USSR, respectively, shortly after the liberation, thus, adopting two different political ideologies and institutions. In 56 years afterwards, South and North Korean societies underwent industrialization and urbanization resulting broad social and cultural changes such as changes in occupation and social stratification and diversification of lifestyles and practices. In addition, the ever deepening ideological and systematic hiatus between the South and North have become an obstacle in the path to national reconciliation and reunification.
Although, social changes in South and North Korean societies are characterized as rapid industrialization and urbanization, appearance wise, not only they present divergence in regards to ideas, strategy, and results, but they also display sharp differences in educational thoughts and values suggesting an anticipation that the reunified national community will bring much more severe side-effects than the unified Germany. In the new era of exchanges and cooperation after the South-North Summit on June 15, 2000, reunification has become a visible agenda that demands a preparation for the life after reunification as much as the realization of reunification itself.
This study aims to seek solutions in the areas of educational thoughts and values to the possibility of social and psychological tensions that might arise after reunification due to different value systems of South and North Koreas. The study attempts to synthesize a national and social value system that would contribute to the formation of a national community for the realization of reunification and become a concrete foundation for the national community minimizing any expected side effects from reunification. In order to do so, this study analyzes the social changes that took place after the division and the changes in the value systems and educational thoughts of South and North Koreas and examines the negative factors hazardous to the formation, maintenance, and development of national community.
As a result, in order to overcome two very different educational thoughts and value systems, South and North Koreas must; 1)establish the value system of the national members and the theoretical system on its orientation, 2)preserve traditional humanism while actively appropriating modern humanism into their own cultures, 3)cooperate and carry out institutional and political reforms for the development of welfare society in harmony with freedom and equality, 4)advance democracy through the expansion of participation for the restoration of humanity and for open society, and 5)set human-centered moral education and values that would overcome ideology and materialism as fundamentally premises.
