The purpose of this paper is to analyze historical and bibliographical informations contained in Naesangki(內喪記), the document for funeral and burial procedures in relations to the death of Shin Eung-soon’s wife. ‘Shin’(辛) is the clan name and they have lived at Yeongkwang county in Cholla province since early Chosun. Through this work we can find the pattern, norm, and ideology about funeral and burial customs of early 17th century in local society.
In traditional period, most villages were composed of gentry and peasantry. The old document Naesangki(內喪記) was produced by gentry Shin himself during and after the mourning period for deceased wife. It contains about detailed funeral procedures, searching burial ground, and choosing the auspicious day for making tomb, etc. According to the books about Ga-rye(家禮), The mourning period for deceased wife is one year which is 13 months for Korean traditional counts.
I have tried to find especially social relations through giving condolence goods or making a call of condolence to aid in and console the funeral family. Analysis showed that Shin had been keeping wide and various relations through kinship, neighborhood, religion including both of Confucianism and Buddhism, and on every social level. And also I rearranged the goods and tools used for funeral and burial ceremony.
Carrying coffin is one of the most important funeral procedures, and it demands many conditions. One of them is manpower. Citizens in urban or small villages in countryside solved it by hiring the funeral specialists. People called them ’Hyangdo-kun(香徒軍)‘ ’sangdu-kun(喪徒軍)‘. ’Sang‘ means mouring, ’Du‘ means band, and ’Kun(꾼)’ means an expert. The village Shin lived is small and had no such band itself. So the magistrate of that county helped him by mobilizing Hyangdo-kun. But such doing was an exceptional case and a sort of violation of law in that times, because it was a private and unofficial affair. The magistrate’s support appeared again at a lawsuit about using the burial ground. From these events we reaffirm Shin‘s social position.
He was an adherent of ritual and well informed and educated about that fields. Such aspects are much contained in Naesangki, so we are also informed and educated about funeral from his recordings.
