This paper aims for studying on the origin of Koguryo, particularly, development of the political unit in terms of archaeological point of view.
The cultural aspects of the First Metal Age (初期金屬器時代 : Bronze age) in the eastern area of Liaohe(遼河) revealed very different features from other areas. The first appearance of metal (bronze) in this area went back to the end of second millennium B.C. The cultural aspects of the First Metal Age have acknowledged by the results of recent archaeological excavation in the area of Liaodong peninsula(遼東半島), Liaoyang(遼陽) and Shenyang(沈陽) districts.
The First Metal Age can be characterized by pip' a-shaped bronze dagger which dated from about tenth to third century B. C. However, the archaeological environments of the central basin of the Abnok(Yalu) river(鴨綠江) was very poor and developed slowly comparing with adjacent area. The metal artifacts were increased by the fourth or third century B. C.
Under political pressure of the powerful China, the aborigines of the eastern Liaohe dispersed to more eastern side around the fifth or fourth century B. C. Some people who constructed stone-piled tombs in Liaodong peninsula moved to the lower basin of Abnok(Yalu) river.
After short term occupying, this group continued to move to the middle and upper basin of Abnok(Yalu) river. At the central basin of Abnok(Yalu) river, stone-piled tomb(績石墓) builders have formed a society named as 'Proto-Koguryo' (原高句麗). Proto-Koguryo consisted of indigenous political units and other groups migrated from northern part of Mancuria known as 'Puyeo'.
