Worldviews are not neutral, autonomous systems for interpreting human experience, but rather flow from the innate human heart-set of either rebellion against, or willing submission to, Jesus Christ as Lord. Three key elements of worldview entail root identity, core beliefs and values, and ultimate allegiance. Where worldviews postulate substitutes in denial of the biblical answers to those issues, those worldviews must ultimately break down as they chafe against the reality of the world as God has created and sustains it. The resulting “sore spots” (both individual and societal) are often painful evidence of the underlying heart idolatries which may have caused or aggravated them. The joint task of missions and of Christian education (Matt. 28:18-20) includes addressing those “sore spots” by connecting them first to such underlying heart idolatries as may be present and then to the healing Good News (the Gospel), in particular as it is summarized in the New Testament’s seminal proclamation that “Jesus Christ is Lord,” with all that it entails.
