The shang was a federation composed of a number of clans, which had same ancestors. In turn, each clan included sub clans. For example, according to 《YinZhou jinmen jicheng(殷周金文集成)》 戈, a clan, was made up of the following sub clans.
〈표 삽입〉
This chart reconstructed from bronze characters of shang period shows that the names of sub clans was consisted of three parts, for example, 戈+父+甲. The first part was the name of a certain clan and also was the name of the clan's territory. This name would become the name of a state in the future. The second part, usually represented with grandfather(祖). father(父), brother(兄), mother(母), grandmother(?), or son(子) meant the relationship between sub clans. Among these characters, 'mother(母)' and 'grandmother(?)' show shang society still contained the inheritance of ancient matricentric society, and '兄' demonstrates the importance of brothership in those days. However, '父' appears most frequently with the extent that sixty or seventy percent of all of the sub clan names includes that character. In the shang society, the sub clans with the character '父' had equal status and saw each other as their brother. These characters grandfather(祖), father(父), brother(兄), mother(母), grandmother(?), son(子)祖, is also believed the origin of the peerage system of Western Zhou, which consisted of gong(公), hou(侯), bo(伯), Zi(子), nan(男) /bo(伯), zhong(仲), shu(菽), ji(季). The third part represents ten material groups with the ten celestial stems (十干), that is, jia(甲), yi(乙), bing(丙), ding(丁), wu(戊), ji(己), geng(庚), xin(辛), ren(壬), ji(癸). For example, the above chart shows that the '戈' clan was composed of nine material groups denoted with named with jia(甲), yi(乙) , bing(丙), ding(丁), wu(戊), ji(己), geng(庚), xin(辛), ji(癸), loosing ren(壬) among the ten celestial stems. During the shang period, these ten celestial stems were associated each other to distinct numerous maternal groups so that endogamy in a maternal group could be avoided.
