Kim Jun-Yop(1920~) was a specialist on Chinese Communist history and an intellectual of enlightenment, firmly based on nationalism, liberalism and democracy. His viewpoint on Chinese Communist movement was closely connected with his point of view on Modem Chinese History. He interpreted Modern Chinese History as a process that escaped from traditional society and accomplished modernity. In other words, it was a process that a backward nation must achieve industrialization and gain freedom and democracy following Western model. This viewpoint was historical view, which consisted of the Oriental Society Backwardness Theory originated from Western traditional viewpoint on the Orient, the Centralism of the Han(Chinese) race, and the Eurocentrism.
His unique interpretation of Modern Chinese History was not only due to his ideas nationalism, anti-communism, liberalism and democracy originated from a variety of individual experience, but also due to a characteristic of the times that China was a hostile country for the Koreans. Moreover, it came from American Cold War cultural politics toward Korea.
