The characteristics of modern nationalism in Korea are closely related to its colonial experience. In terms of origination history, modern nationalism in Korea started with the contradiction in Western modernism. From the world history viewpoint, however, the sublation of modernism can be said to have started with the sublation and subjugation of contradiction in colonial modernization as a historical task for the Third World. Therefore, modern and contemporary Korean history can and should be understood vis-a-vis world history. From this point of view, nationalism in the first half of the 20th century should be described and taught dynamically and concretely in the historical context of modem and contemporary Korea rather than based on ultra-historical or unilateral thought (Sollen). In particular, modern and contemporary Korean history should be described under the basic framework of a nation seeking to become a modem one; in particular, various modernities based on its colonial experience should be highlighted, and the method of describing the combination of nationalism and modern subjects, introduced. This is particularly important, since the basic work constituting the entire history covering both the first and second parts of the 20th century can deepen understanding of the modernities to be sublated and overcome by approaching nationalism from the historical viewpoint. It can also diversify and deepen our knowledge of historical facts in the first part of the 20th century, which cannot be explained by the confrontational relationship between "invasion and resistance" alone. Teaching modern and contemporary Korean history based on this precept rejects exclusive and suppressive nationalism, taking an objective view of nationalism instead and contributing to the formation of balanced historical view and national consciousness to enable one to become a dignified cosmopolitan. It is also expected to contribute to the composition of a new and higher level of "national history" by establishing a universal and persuasive historical view of Korean nationalism vis-a-vis world history.
