There exists wide spectrum on the conception of nation and nationalism. Changing nation-state's role in the world forced historians and history educators to reconsider nation and nationalism. And there are many arguments in the research and teach korean history.
Nation and nationalism are main themes in research and teach korean history. Recently this tendencies are criticized by some post-modern style historians, because of it's nation-centrism. They are arguing that nationalistic history and history teaching make readers and students blind about realities. They argue that nationalism or nation-centrism is the general tendency of the world.
But many historian maintenance the thought that nation and nationalism is important in researching and teaching history. In korean history, proto-nation(民族體) is formed long time ago, go back to Sirna Dynasty. After the end of 19th century, koreans wish to build nation-state. But, imperialism Japan invaded and colonized Korea. Koreans struggle for independent.
So many historians and history educators think that nationalism in history teaching is important as usual. Today, in rapidly changing world situation, students must have more wide perspective from history learning. Students should have not only world-wide perspective but also patriotism. History teachers must provide this to students in Korea.
