Recently many historians and educators argued for 'new' world history teaching. They advocate teaching world history as interregional exchange among various parts of globe, from multicultural perspective. They see world history via globalism and emphasize mutual active process of political, economic, and cultural network. They also contend that world history should be constructed beyond nation-state level, thus enhance the understanding of mutual relations among various ethnic groups, regional areas, and cultural fields.
But this study found that multiculturalism or cultural pluralism shows another hegemonic characteristic by making 'boundaries' under the guise of emphasis on 'difference of cultures'. For example 'East Asia' or 'China' replaces 'Europe' as a central force in world history, and the concept of 'Orient' emerges as a follower of 'Europe' rather than as an alternative to 'Europe'. Also, multiculturalism doesn't seem to get near to constructing 'transnational' identity by transcending 'traditional community'. Korean historians strongly adhere to 'resistant nationalism' against present ethnocentrism of great nations. To them, national history teaching is more important than 'multiethnic', 'multicultural', 'multiregional' world history teaching.
Thus world history teaching for 'reading others' must overcome the barrier of national history and develop new paradigms, new organizing principles, and new concepts of world history. Multiculturalism is too naive to struggle against eurocentrism and ethnocentrism, too weak to deconstruct political and ideological nature of history teaching in schools.
