History which is, at present, taught as a required course at most colleges of General Studies in Korea is one of the important courses.
The purpose of hi$tory-education as General Studies would be explained that education in history provides the foundation of cultivating humanity, that is, humanistic education. To put it in detail, by teaching history a sound view on history could be established so as to get a new insight, cultivate one's national identity, form a historical consideration and a desirable character as well as to improve a better understanding between nations. I want to emphasize that education in history at colleges has to be given based on the dimension of historical philosophy. and so history ought to be taught, differently from the traditional way of teaching an outline of history, for students to be able to analyze and evaluate historical facts Now. the way of lecturing only is not welcome. Therefore, history should be taught based on mutual discussion and experimental method, so that students are able to study history on their own and get lots of
advantages from learing history.
I want to propose some suggestions on the direction of teaching
history as General Studies.
1. to have students get a sound view on history.
2. to bring up men of character by human education
3. to teach students to be equipped with the ability to cope with
changes with an emphasis on teaching the current history.
4. to enable students to accept foreign cultures and to Create their own proper culture.
5. to enable students to understand the general flow of the whole history. with an emphasis on teaching the history of culture and social economy
6. to get students to perform self-study by submitting papers on work book and the impression from reading.
7. Historical professors ought to be equipped with two phases of historians and educators. etc.
