Postmodern theorists of History have brought up Discourses on 'nation', 'nationalism' and 'nationalistic history', who aimed to criticise what history must be taught in our country. That is, overall raising objections to the current status of History Subject and the existing system of construction of subject matters. It is of much importance, I think, in that it have given the opportunities of self-reflection to the groups of Korean History and History Education.
In a global age, confronting the increasing situation of multi-national capitalism and aggressive and greedy ethnocentrism of world powers, things goes from bad to worse. Postmodern theorists of history, however, kept criticizing only negative part in the diverse faces of nationalism. Eventually it may be said that they invited a anarchic state of the evaluation.
In the modern times, nation state is real. So education of National History must present our students who will live a life in this hard times with opportunity to promote and strengthen a world view of sovereignty and independence. Education of National History have to give them a opportunity to expect our future affirmatively on the basis of open-nationalism, accepting change of things. National History Textbook should show them the course of Self-Management, Unification, and Democratization in our country. In this sense, National History that is alive will be a alternative.
Nowadays our students is going to incline to deny the established authority in school system and its Texts. For Postmodern theory of History to have a future prospect. It must accomplish the task, which is to communicate opinions with our students, collect a variety of teaching-learning cases that is in use currently at school, and advance the theory.
Problems of relation between National History and World History follows Discussions on 'Nation'. They can't combine integratively each other in existing Curriculum, not to mention a integration of History and other subjects in Social Studies. Seeking the frame by solving these problems and changing the direction newly and progressively is still serious task handed down to us.
