The purpose of this study is to examine the process of athlete development in the Korean Track and Field by the use of a normative Sport Development model. Yin(1994)'s multiple case study method was adapted. The total of 14 former athletes, who represent the Korean Track and Field, were interviewed. They were asked to identify how the grassroots athletes of the Korean Track and Field start their careers, maintain their careers, and move toward higher elite level athletes. The qualitative data was categorized with comparative analysis and later reexamined through applicable social science theories and empirical evidence. The findings of this study were presented in three parts. First, the factors that appear to influence athletes' entrance were identified to athletes' self acknowledgement on his or her talent on the track and field as individual level factor and significant others (i.e., coach, family), fragmented track and field events, lack of media exposure, and negative social climate as socio-environmental factors. Second, athletes' retention was influenced by enduring goal-setting of athletes toward record. On the other hand, those factors which are the uncertainty of future career as athletes and injuries were identified to constraint factors. In the perspective of socio-environmental factors, the relationship between athletes and coach was critical factor for their retention in the track and field sport. Finally, the results showed that athletes' advancement toward elite level appears to be related to goal-setting for specific events such as the Olympic Games and opportunities to compete with his or her rivalry. The injury was also indicated as a constraint factor. The factors that are related to socio-environment were identified to coach's ability, relationship between athletes and coach, team climate, the availability of information, level of events, and media exposure on the trackand field. This study implies that the Korea Track & Field could be better advanced when we focus on both participants' socio-psychological characteristics and environmental contexts. It is expected that the findings of this study could contribute to future Sport Development Research in Korea.
