The study explores discourse and narrative functions of connective particles in Old Russian narrative texts, specifically жe, бо, и, and a. They are apparently redundant filler or speech routines with no distinctive grammatical or lexical functions, and yet these small words turn out to play an essential role in imparting texture in Slavonic narrative texts. They are discourse deixis in that they index narrative or discourse functions, or the speaker's evaluative attitude or affective stance.
In terms of formal characteristics, the connective particles are clitics, i. e., enclitics (жe, бо) or proclitics (и, a) dependent on host words with the main stress. This prosodic dependence finds its correlate in its context-sensitive discourse functions.
The connective particle JKe marks a shifted and recovered topic. and marks the categorical or dual judgement type. This discourse marker indexes semantic definiteness and is closely related to the information or thematic structure. The connective particle 60 marks maximal backgrounding and subordinate discourse functions. This particle is mostly employed for elaborations or digressive comments and usually accompanies verb-initial element order correlating with the thetic or single judgement type. H is also related to thetic or single judgement type and verb-initial element order, and is crucial in forming the event structure for the narrative and maximally foregrounds the chronological chain of events. In contrast, a tends to involve dual or categorical judgement type and indexes the speaker's subjective evaluation. Further. H speeds up the narrative flow and endows wholistic and external perspective. whereas a retards the narrative flow and endows internal perspective. Thus the four connective particles are distinct or differential. and yet are interconnected and complementary in discourse or narrative functions. Given that these are highly sensitive to the macro contexts of genre and register. the correlations between register. text genre and particles need to be further investigated.
