The railways, included in the national transportation networks, have become one of important means of transportation. And, it is anticipated that the railway constructions are increased more and more, because the transportation demands have increased and recently proposed national development strategy of low carbon green growth will promote environmentally friendly green transportation. Prior to the construction of large-scale underground structures in the urban areas, the deep excavation work is required necessarily. Generally, open cut method is most widely used method in the deep excavation for the construction of underground structures. In this case, the temporary support systems are used to resist lateral earth pressures acting on the retaining walls during excavation works. When the excavation works and installation of temporary support systems are completed, the upward constructions of underground structures begin in regular sequence. This paper presents a case study of design and construction of underground railway station using downward method, alternative to the open cut method. In this case, the downward method with CFT-Pile was used to improve quality and safety, and minimize the effect of excavation disturbance on the existing railway tracks near the underground railway station. Similar construction projects are currently under development in the urban areas and this paper might become a useful reference for preceding such project.
