One of the most remarkable fields in Korean history since 1945 would be a series of studies on shirhak, literally meaning ‘true learning’ or ‘practical learning.’ Such a research trend was initiated be scholarly interests in Yu Hy?ngw?n, whose proposal for land reform and its philosophical basis are well expressed in his great work Pan’gye surok.
The most commonly accepted view of shirhak scholars reform ideas so far was provided by Kim Yongs?p some decades ago: Kim understood that there were two different types of reform ideas proposed by shirhak scholars in late Chos?n. According to him, one was the proposals suggested by pro-Zu Xi scholars as a possible government policy with more emphasis on taxation than land per se. The other was the proposals presented by those who were critical to Zhu Xi and paid more attention to the reform of land ownership itself. Kim saw Yu the most influential scholar for the latter case.
Scholar-officials’s concept of the ‘land system’ in late Chos?n society, however, was totally different from that of modern people, and modern scholars have little attention to this difference so far. The scholar-officials of the time never separated taxation and land ownership from each other but dealt with the two in one packet, which they thought could not be divided into two different issues. Needless to say, Yu was one of them. From this perspective, this paper reexamines Yu’s version of the land system for the better understanding of the so-called land system implemented in the Chos?n period.
