This paper deals with some Russian modal auxiliaries, which combine with main verbs (infinitive or finite forms). The Russian modals can be verbs, adjectives, adverbs and even particles. In other words, Russian modals is very much a semantic category rather than syntactic or lexical one. So the category of modals could not systematically established in russian grammaticography. In contrast to many previous studies, I tried to show in this paper the development of selected modals in terms of grammaticalization theory of Lehmann(20022), where he divides the complex process of grammaticalization in six distinct processes, such as attrition, paradigmatization, obligatorification, condensation, coalescence and fixation.
According to Lehmann, in these processes operate grammaticalization parameters, such as paradigmaticity, paradigmatic variability, integrity, boundedness, syntagmatic variability and structural scope. Of these the integrity of a sign should be distinguished formal morphological attrition from semantic attrition(bleaching). After examined selected Russian modals, one can have the opinion that obligatorification of paradigmatic variability and coalescence of boundedness did not differentiate the degrees of these auxiliaries. The following table is the result of the degrees of the Russian modals, after having applied the parameters of grammaticalization.

As a result, the degree of grammaticalization mainly varies in the parameters of integrity. Whereas бы(б), ба, набо have undergone considerable morphological and semantic attrition and нельзя, nycmb to a less degree, бавай and so on are affected only by semantic attrition. There also exist grammaticalization processes which does not show a considerable lack of correlation in some parameters.
