Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship of apathy to executive dysfunction in patients with Alzheimer's disease(AD).
Methods: Sixty four AD patients were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery including executive function. Level of apathy was assessed with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory.
Results: Thirty four AD patients had apathy and 30 patients had no apathy. There were no significant differences in age, sex, level of education, Korean-Mini Mental State Examination, Clinical Dementia Rating, Seoul-Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Geriatric Depression Scale, and all subscales of NPI except apathy between patients with and without apathy. Patients with apathy had significantly lower scores on tests of immediate verbal memory, category verbal fluency, go-no-go test compared with those without apathy.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that apathy is associated with executive dysfunction in patients with AD.
