Gaetaesa is a temple built by Taejo Wanggun(왕건) of Goryeo(고려) right after he unified the three kingdoms. In this respect, it has a historical significance. However, there remains a vacant site now, since Gaetaesa was built more than a thousand years ago and was ruined in Joseon dynasty. Although there are few relics that show a great influence at that time, legends about the temple have been handed down. Those legends help us understand a historical significance, an influence upon local residents, and a history of Gaetaesa. This study is to elucidate the characteristics of the temple from this point of view.
There are a variety of types in legends concerning Gaetaesa. The legends are mainly divided into stories about things and persons. There are many legends about things, but few about persons. It suggests that the history of Gaetaesa focused on the unessential function of Buddhism rather than the essential one. Main legends about things are stories of foundation history, miracle of Buddihist image, expelling of wicked monk, and miracle of iron cauldron.
Out of the various historical events of Gaetaesa around a thousand year, only a few limited stories became legends. Even among those events an incident or a small local history rather than a simple fact or a great national history, that is the story closely related to local society or residents, is likely to tum into legends.
One of the specific examples that a history related to Gaetaesa turned into a legend is a story about a miracle of three Buddhist images. The legend seems to reflect an invasion of Japanese troops at the end of Goryeo. It is believed that the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 had influence on popularity and expression of the story after that.
A legend that a wicked monk was punished seems to appear on the basis of the corruption of temples starting in Joseon period. The story says that there was a strong monk in a temple who would kill a groom and sport with a bride. One day, a young boy showed up and kill the monk at a stroke. It is sometimes said that not a boy but Munsu Bak(박문수:1691~1756) dispatched by the king expelled the monk. In fact, this legend is seems to have been a story regarding a character of Il Choi(1615~1686) in Joseon period. It is likely that his story was changed into the one about Munsu Bak who was popular with the people, and then the one about a nameless young boy. A young boy in the story - called a youngster wearing a straw hat - suggests that the story reflects a popular consciousness.
A legend of the miracle of the cauldron is handed down most actively legends about Gaetaesa and it is divided into various small-scale stories. That is because the cauldron, which is of a large size unparalleled anywhere in the world (a height of 1 meter, a diameter of 3 meters, and a circumference of 9.4 meters), incessantly excites people's wonders. There are high possibilities of continuously producing new types of legends about the cauldron.
New types of Gaetaesa legends and their variants have been produced according to the current of the times. And they revealed the locality and popular consciousness of the legends. These are some important characteristics of Gaetaesa legends as a whole
