In the Tanzanian context, the study introduces a new idea of estimation of carbon values of forest reserves managed by communities. The most importantly, the idea goes to the forests, which before transformed into community-based forest management were not reserved, and subjected to various anthropogenic disturbances. Supportively, the valuation of forest ecosystems majors on various global fora, especially when it comes to promotion of sustainable development and reduction of greenhouse effects. Carbon-trading is one of the issues taken in such the global fora. The study used inventory data taken in 2003 from Duru-Haitemba Forest Reserve, which is distributed to eight villages and its forest patches are named after the respective villages. The data were analyzed and transformed into various parameters of forest stocking such as tree/shrub stem, basal area, volume and biomass densities before transformed into carbon density and its relative costs. The value of carbon used in the study was US$ 10 per Carbon ton per hectare, adopted from reviewing various studies done world over. The study found out that a large proportion of stem density is accounted for small sized diameter classes below 30 em diameter at breast height (dbh). Basal area, volume, biomass and carbon densities were also influenced by stem density. Carbon values obtained in the study are comparable and reflecting the realities of carbon-trading system. From the values estimated in the study, different societies such as scientists, communities, policy makers and business companies would create interests of working on valuation of forest ecosystems that are under community management.
