The purpose of this study is to study the determinants of Korean FDI in China. Using the panel data on Korean FDI in China for the years 1996-2002, we examined the motivations of direct investment, market access and factor proportions, in China from Korean firms.
The emprical results of this paper shows that RGDP and SEZ are positive and statically significant, while WAGM and RENT are negative and statically significant in China A region (3 provinces & cities). Korean FDI in China A region is consistent with motives related to the factor proportions hypothesis to exploit the cheap labor.
In China B region(10 provinces & cities), RGDP, ROAD,SEZ and EDU are positive and statically significant, while RENT is negative and statically significant. The coefficient of RGDP in region B is bigger than that of region A and the coefficient of SEZ in region B is bigger than that of region A.
On the other hand, WAGM in China B is negative but statically insignificant. Korean FDI in China B region is consistent with motives related the market access motivation.
