Without question, third-party logistics(3PL) services are an important trend in logistical management during the 1990s. Estimates vary concerning the magnitude of 3PL, but there is little question that opportunities for these services will continue to grow. While third-party logistics has been characterized as a relatively new idea in Korea, it is seen as a fairly mature philosophy in advanced countries. Recent statements to this effect include "While many Korea-based companies have long been accustomed to performing many of their logistics operations in-house, advanced firms have relied more on third parties for such services".
To date, however, no study has appeared comparing the perceptions of the two groups, shippers and providers of 3PL services. Thus the main objectives of the research reported in this article are to present a utilization of the third-party logistics services by establishing strategic partnerships between the shippers and third party providers. And also this study is (1) to evaluate reasons why firms choose to use third-party logistics services; (2) to ascertain the perceptions of the two groups(shippers and providers of 3PL services) ; (3) to examine the obstacles and problems in implementing 3PL services between the shippers and third party providers ; and addtionally, (4) to provide a summary of relevant literature.
