The companies that serve regional market are threatened by the emergence of many multinationals or global competitors, who have technological advantage, the ability to use capital efficiently, and abundant knowledge of foreign market. Thus, to adjust external environment and overcome the menace of multinational or global enterprises, every company pursues foreign direct investment (FDI). Korean firms' foreign direct investment has been increased rapidly during 1990s. However, many companies have pursued investment by several CEOs' arbitrary decision or have had poorly planned regional management strategies. Thus some of them are failed to gain a satisfactory outcome and, therefore, withdrawed from host country.
In this context, a lot of studies have examined closely how to overcome these problems and how to deal with their subsidiaries more effectively. This study has the purpose of explaining these problems from the view point of strategic management. In this study, I examined strategic choice of Korean firms, Who are operating in Russia between 1990 - 1999.
The empirical findings are as follows: First, the strategic groups are successfully classified into 3 groups and there are significant difference in outcome among strategic groups. Second, from the examination of the 'fitness' between strategic types and external environment and between strategic types and organization, there are significant results that the more outcome the strategic group earns the more it fits in organization. But in the case of 'fitness' between strategic types and external environment significant results are not found.
