This paper aims to reveal the deferred comic denoument of Twelfth Night centering on the characters deviated from the Romantic Comedy whose characteristic is the happy ending of the protagonists' love affairs. Generally, the existing criticism on Twelfth Night has been concentrated on the triangular relationship of Orsino, Viola and Olivia, the problem of Malvolio and Feste's mysterious songs. But their criticism on these characters has sometimes lacked in validity and overlooked Antonio who contributes to the problematic ending of the play. For supplementing the defects of their criticism, this paper macroscopically focuses on Malvolio, Feste and Antonio based on intensive reading of the text.
Though Twelfth Night seems to end with the proclamation of wedding ceremony between Orsino and Viola, between Olivia and Sebastian, their joint wedding ceremony is unlimitedly delayed. The reason for it is that Captain who can carry Viola's wish into effect is made a charge against and put into prison by Malvolio. To make the matters worse, Malvolio whose whole-hearted support is greatly needed for the happy ending of the play exits from the stage proclaiming revenge against all of his victimizers. Besides, Feste's four songs except one light round have a somewhat depressing tinge and contribute to the play's disturbing undertone. Furthermore, Antonio's passionate desire for Sebastian is finally frustrated. So he remains lonely amid the lovers' happy union of Act V. In conclusion, Twelfth Night is rather a problematic comedy with deferred comic denoument than a Romantic Comedy.
