In Modern Chinese Dictionary (5th edition), the meaning of the two words-“merely” and “so long as” have been changed greatly. “Merely”, which was originally defined as “required condition”, is defined as “unique condition” now; The definition of “so long as” is also changed from “sufficient condition” into “necessary condition”. These changes make us reconsider the meaning of these two words. This article argues that only through logical proofs, can we get the real meaning of “merely” and “so long as”.
It aims to demonstrate two questions whether “merely” is denoting : necessary condition or unique condition, and whether “so long as” is indicating sufficient condition or necessary condition. By constructing a logic, fact and grammar-integrating demonstration system, and by means of proving whether grammar structure is exactly reflecting logic and fact, finally the grammatical meaning of “merely” is defined as “the unique condition”, and that of “so long as” is defined as “sufficient condition”. Furthermore, it explains some grammatical and logical problems in the practical application of these two words accordingly.
