The objective of this paper is to show the general pessimism on human being revealed in Shakespeare's Coriolanus as one of the most distinguished tendencies in Jacobean drama.
Interpreted in the light of political point of view, this play has been looked upon as the metaphor or the replica of Jacobean England under the veil of Roman history. This play in fact seems to involve much similarities with the Jacobean political situations, especially those of class struggle and social disorder derived from it. This critical eye leads us to focus our interest to Coriolanus' character problems and his aptitude as a consul in Roman society, which results in the fact that Coriolanus, due to his overflowing pride as a war hero, is so arrogant and despotic that he can not live in human society. To him political world is a servitude whereas war for Rome is freedom. But regardless of his intention other characters surrounding Coriolanus, urging him into the political world, charge himself with the burden of tragic destiny.
In this process we can see the faults and the undesirable features in characters surrounding Coriolanus. Menenius as a renowned and sophisticated patrician fails to show his responsibility as a leading politician. He always tries to represent and defend aristocratic privilege. He can not have the ear and the eye for protecting citizens. And from Volurnnia we can not find the genuine motherhood. She manipulates his son, Coriolanus with the Machiavellian tactics. To her honor Coriolanus brings is everything. Through him she attempt to satisfy her desire. Therefore to her Coriolanus is a puppet. Two tribunes and citizens are full of avarice and groundless malignity for Coriolanus. They always settle their interest and profit prior to solidarity of Roman society.
The anomie each character shows may reflect the general pessimism in Jacobean England. In Jacobean age we can see many social and moral disorder in every part of society. General anxiety and moral unstability caused by this anomie affect human consciousness and behavior at that time. Shakespeare, in this sense, may try to reflect such a misanthropic vision on human being under the veil of Roman history in Coriolanus.
