Recently the sexual chaos in Measure for Measure has often been interpreted psychologically. Based upon C. G. Jung's concepts of 'collective shadow' and 'archetype', this paper deals with the Duke's individuation process related to governing Vienna. Shakespeare and Jung have one thing in common. They searched for the universality of the human conditions; the former created his psychologically plausible works by his keen intuition, and the other established a new academic foundation of interpreting the playwright's works of art scientifically.
The ruler in the Renaissance can represent the body politic in a sense, and thus the threatening sexual disorder in Vienna requires the Duke to go through his individuation process. Too much prodigality has amplified the negative energy of the collective shadow. This situation compels the Duke to take extraordinary measures in order to get out of it. The Duke's actions to substitute himself with Angelo, disguise himself as a friar, and direct many affairs of the Viennese citizens call be interpreted as valiant judgments of facing the destructive side of the collective shadow, and for changing it into the positive side ultimately.
Angelo and Isabella represent the extremely repressed anima and animus, but they disguise themselves by adopting legalism as their persona. They are the most difficult for a leader to rule. Like Angelo and Isabella, all the lovers in Vienna fail to develop their anima and animus into syzygos. The Duke, nevertheless, successfully recovers his power. Life and anima have the power to search for secret order in chaos. This is called enantiodromie, the creative autonomy of the unconscious. Now the Duke fully understands what the positive and creative power of the law is like. He also appreciates his newly gained self which consists of his own individual and the whole Viennese. It is a significant trial to read this play in terms of lung's view.
