This study aims to investigate two meanings: one what Kinetic art is and the other how the art's becoming production design is shown in the film. The images of the production design in 〈The housemaid〉 are needed to be thought as one scene and also the connotations of the images analyzed.
The research methods are as follows: first basis on the literature study, next the interpretation of Kinetic art and the image in artistic aspect, last analysis of the film, through appreciation of 〈The housemaid〉, that is practical access. This article analyzes a main visual setting like a house and the others, which are appropriate to reveal theme.
As a result, a house in the film is one of the most crucial elements, constructing characters, settings, and plot; it serves as a background as well as characters' mental world. The refilled house with Western linear structure looks like a palace of a dream, but in fact it expresses the closed society where the only higher classes survive; It also induces us to discover the meanings of the desires, events, and actions in the film. In short, the house in 〈The housemaid〉 could be seen as a symbol of wealth, representing characters' everyday life.
The images of the settings in the film are settings itself; a piano is functioned as Hoon's monopoly of time, place and exhibits his hypocrisy. A fireplace, a token of riches, is usually used as building romantic mood, burning wood, but artificial flames are made in 〈The housemaid〉; the scenes of the fireplace have connotations such as Hye-ra's wrath, Euni's persistence to bear a baby, and her curse through suicide. The luxurious chandelier from the high ceiling symbolizes authority, wealth, and desires, but it offers the conclusive motive to Euni's death.
A bathtub is also a instrument for expression of sexual desire, having semiotic meanings and roles; Euni's figure cleaning the bathtub implies sexuality and shows what the film focuses on. In conclusion, the production design in 〈The housemaid〉 is a medium setting by an art director's intention of making stories and plays as a Kinetic art, creating a story, theme.
