Both works have a common a view of man as inclined toward evil. Durrenmatt sees this evident in the behavior of the residents of Gullen. Golding sees it in the behavior of the children marooned on an island after a forced landing.
In the first section, the introduction of my work, the contemporaneous commonality between Durrenmatt and Golding's writing will be discussed.
During the Second World War, in which he had participated, Golding lived through violence and cruelty faced by man. Durrenmatt wrote his work when the effects of capitalism were becoming more and more evident.
They both show how easily men are seduced and how easily they could return to being primitive.
In the second section, the subjects of both works will be explored: the perversions of justice, the decline of morality, the world of chaos and the critique of capitalism. The theme itself: The failure of human development: The abandonment of democratic values and the abandonment of faith.
In the beginning, the Guellenders and the children on the island held on to the hopes of future rescue and behaved as proper Englishmen, Europeans and Christians. They tried to make decisions based on democratic values.
Unfortunately, they kept inclining toward force and barbarity. Without exception, they always embraced evil. Through this one can see that each of us is receptive to the sinfulness within.
In the third section, the power of evil will be precisely explored in the persona of the old Gullen woman and Jack, Lord of the Flies, who most clearly embodies evil. In this section we are able to see the idolization of money and the quest for wealth. And also in this section, decadence of the group be explored: the process of seduction. In the fourth section, figures that recognize the sinfulness within people will be explored. They see their own guilt, which they heretofore were unaware of, a guilt from which they've long suffered and struggled against.
Through their enlightenment, Simon, Ralph and Ill wish to convince the others. These people, however, do not wish to listen and also don't understand. Then, although under different circumstances, both Simon and Ill are offered up as sacrifices.
Durrenmatt and Golding wish to make us aware of our own situation, namely that the deterioration of society is related to man's nature - egoism - the original sin in Christian thought. And furthermore, that we are ill and are in need of healing.
