In The Rules of Art: Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field, Pierre Bourdieu pointed out the problem in the former literary observation methodology. The secret of his criticism on the literary text analysis theories in terms of content, style and sociology is that they failed to consider the field of literature production which is the very space for objective relation. He interprets that there has been a conflict between two sub-fields (the field of restricted production and the field of large-scale production) in order to monopolize the literary justice. In other words, he insists that the literature performers engage in the symbolic conflict to realize the literary justice which is considered as power of literature.
A Feuilleton is the light entertainment articles in daily newspapers. It's a volumetric satirical genre. Even though it started as a public journal. it was qualified as a literary genre. In 1920's. Feuilleton became very influential as the power of literature. The famous writers took the Feuilleton job as either writer or editor and tried to write new articles. Actually. they could peacefully secure the literary justice. Due to the success of Feuilleton, the democratic newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung which was published in Berlin under the big capital from LG. Farben became one of the most influential newspaper of that time. Considering the Bourdieu's contention that the symbolic hierarchy of literary genre is formed by the readers. it seems that the public interest and demand in the rapid-changing German metropolis at that time played a great role in making the production of Feuilleton literature possible.
As a dynamic force of literary production, Bourdieu's comprehensive study on literature different from the conventional methodology which just focuses on the analysis of genre and text style broadens the observers' view on the literature and helps them to do the better research. In this paper, Feuilleton pieces of ]oseph Roth, a novelist and famous journalist of Frankfurter Zeitung, have been investigated based on Bourdieu's comprehensive literary methodology. Based on the Bourdieu's contention that the 'actual situation' is descriptively condensed in the literature as a form of social structure, The descriptive features of Roth's Feuilleton works have been investigated in connection with the structure of literary field.
